Aiding Arthur's Victims

The plight of our brothers and sisters down south echoed throughout the country. Many of us were left in tears after we saw the footage on our local news. This indeed was a phenomenon of nature that struck in the dead of night and left many homeless, without clothing, books, appliances and food.

LICU appealed to the compassion and generosity of its shareholders to gather food, clothing, water and other necessary supplies and our trust in you, our shareholders, was immediate, generous and heartfelt. Even though the cry for help was shared only since Thursday, June 5, 2008, we had more than enough goods and food and volunteers to fill four vehicles to take down south on Sunday, June 8, 2008. This effort was made in collaboration with The Belize Credit Union League.

Although we had seen the heart-wrenching images on the television, we were emotionally overwhelmed to witness the destruction and the loss first-hand. The stories of the horrors lived on that fatal night were shared by many. The terror of living through the darkness of the night amidst shouts of panic and fear was still evident in their faces and the physical destruction was beyond belief. We had about 500 plates of food to distribute and the look of gratitude on their faces as they received them was heartbreaking. We, who did not suffer any loss, take for granted our daily meals, yet these people who have had so little for these past two weeks, cherish and feel it as a treat to enjoy a warm meal. The mothers were eagerly looking through the donated clothing and were all excited when they did find something that would fit their children. Most of the children were walking barefoot in the bacteria infested puddles and thick mud. We may have an extra pair of shoes or slippers just lying around the house, check around to see what you can give for there are still so many that need.

We wish to extend a big THANK YOU to everyone who generously gave of their time, their clothes, their cooking skills and their goods. Your selfless action gave the recipients joy, comfort and hope. We will continue receiving donations during this coming week of June 9-13, 2008, and we humbly request that you assist in any way that you possibly can. We might feel that our trials and burdens are heavy, but compared to the devastation and destruction down south, we are all far better off than them. Once again, we wish to extend our deepest appreciation for everyone who helped and continue to encourage the spirit of brotherhood.
